    Eradication

The current outbreak at Omakiwi Bay, Te Rawhiti
Exotic caulerpa was identified by a very observant local resident in May 2023, who notified Biosecurity New Zealand. By June, NRC and mana whenua met to assess the situation. In July a delegation traveled to Wellington to meet with government officials. An immediate pledge was made to work with mana whenua and local Councils to engage in technology trials as part of an eradication and education programme.

A Controlled Area Notice (CAN) and Rahui were put in place. Divers were sent in to scope the intensity of the outbreak.

    Technology trials
Steps were taken to tender for technology trials and Johnson Brothers of Opua won the tender to develop a potential eradication technology.

Johnson Bros developed a large dredge that scoops exotic caulerpa from the sea floor. Early trials have been positive and ongoing technology advances are being implemented.

    Education
Over the summer mana whenua have been involved in an education programme with ambassadors at boat ramps, on the water reaching out to skippers of boats anchored in the CAN area and educating the public on local islands to ensure visitors to the Bay of Islands were well informed about the CAN and the Rahui.

    Establish a community driven team
Whilst government officials have been exceptionally supportive of the dredging trials and education programmes, mana whenua and local community members are aware that central and local government funds are extended and have therefore decided to establish a community driven team.
